　「やらか堂繁盛記」で知った話。

By the outbreak of World War II he had already had several novels published as Nevil Shute and intended to devote himself full time to writing. However, he joined the Royal Navy, hoping to serve on a patrol trawler, until his engineering expertise was considered too vital to waste. Thereafter he served in naval intelligence, inventing various secret weapons. Most worked: an acoustic device warning ships of approaching aircraft; the Rocket Spear, used by planes against enemy U-boats; a freshwater still, for use in the desert, that condensed water from lorry exhausts.

Unfortunately, the most spectacular of his inventions - the Great Panjandrum, a giant, rocket-propelled Catherine Wheel intended to smash Hitler's Atlantic Wall - went haywire on a Devon beach and was never used.
